Welcome . . . .
Personal Protection & E-Safety
When the nights draw in and the days get cold and windy, for some reason we all feel a little more vulnerable than usual. It could just be our perception, but I fear that an increased threat is more likely a reality. With the current economic climate being what it is, and aided by the cover of darkness, criminals may get a bit more opportunist in the run up to Christmas, so now is a good time to think about personal security. Consider too not only your concerns, but also those of isolated family members and friends. With over 500 neighbourhood watches running in Elmbridge, covering 42% of households in the area, a lot of people are looking out for each other; but what are they looking out for? The answer is simple - suspicious people, activity or just something they are not comfortable with, so be aware.
As someone who has been on the frontline in both military combat and on homeland soil during the terror attacks, I personally know how important it is to stay alert and anticipate danger. So this winter it will be good practice to check any alarms in or on your property, including your smoke alarm. Check up on any vulnerable or elderly neighbours too. Check your local papers for specific and current criminal activity, such as distraction burglary or car crime hot spots. Ensure you have adequate lighting outside and remember that by displaying a Neighbourhood Watch sticker and being an active member within your street, you are much less likely to become a target.
On the personal security front, if you or your children are going to parties outside the area, or attending large venues, why not carry a personal attack alarm. They are not expensive to buy but improve your confidence and therefore make you more security aware, especially when using taxis, buses, trains or unfamiliar walks.
Finally, the Internet, this is an area of vulnerability often over looked but it can pose a serious threat to a happy holiday and a prosperous new year. Use any spare time to change passwords, delete suspect emails and check your wireless router is locked down. Get involved with what your children are doing online, especially during the holiday period when they have more time available. Remember, you can lock your front doors but access is not restricted to this, so do not be alarmed, but be aware of the real and present dangers created by the Cyber World. E-safety and E-security are issues which we actively promote, so why not get involved too with your local school or an online safety charity such as the Lucy Faithful Foundation? They could help you to find out more, increasing the protection for both you and your family.
