John Charman

John joined Radio Wey on 17th May 1972, and was recruited by our founder member Alan Timbrell. He presents the Big Band Show every Sunday.

John retired 18 years ago after a fascinating career, including 20 years as a pilot instructor in the RAF. He now spends time indulging his passion to Big Band and British Dance music. He enjoys swing, dance and big band music and helps run the West Surrey Big Band Society, which has developed a reputation as the best in the UK and has taken him all over the country.

John has been a keen railway modeller since his RAF days and lists his most memorable Radio Wey moment as the special broadcast he made with the legendary broadcaster Alan Dell, when we moved to our current studios in 1989.
