Basingstoke Canal

The Surrey and Hampshire Canal Society was formed over 40 years ago to campaign for the restoration of the then-derelict Basingstoke Canal. After more than twenty years of work by thousands of volunteers, the canal re-opened in 1991.

Today it provides a source of pleasure and recreation for the inhabitants of towns like Woking through which it passes. Its towpath is used by thousands of walkers, cyclists and fishermen, while boaters enjoy one of the most beautiful waterways in the country.

However, the canal is not without its problems and is still in need of help, not least to enable more boats to use it. In recent years the Canal Society's volunteers have worked to improve water supplies on the canal and are still busy on a number of projects.

The canal is arguably the area's most important recreational facility as well as being a haven for wildlife. If you would like to help to ensure that it stays this way, why not join the Canal Society? It doesn’t matter whether you end up brick laying, crewing our trip boat, typing letters or just lending moral support, if you are interested, please phone 07964 357442 and leave your name and number.

I'll contact you as soon as possible.
